DAILY WORK
In the countryside of the island, the women cook with firewood and grind the maize in pilão. Pilão or pylon is a container where the corn or the coffee is placed and wooden pestle is used to grind it up. The clothes are washed by hand in communal areas. Once washed the clothes are left to dry on stones. It is very common to see women carrying buckets of clothes and water on their heads. The water to drink or to cook comes from natural sources and the women and the children transport it.   In the constructions of houses or walls, women carry stones; since there is no road in many parts of the island. They carry this on theirs heads, on a coiled fabric call "radía".
